Harry Buschman
Harry Buschman was born more than eighty years ago in a slum neighborhood of downtown Brooklyn.
After graduating architectural school, he joined the regular army in 1939 and spent World War II on anti-submarine patrol. He practiced architecture as a vocation and photography as an avocation for nearly forty years in New York and New England.
He edits two photography newsletters and contributes news to a local newspaper. The latter job was the inspiration for a serial novel he calls “Westlake Village,” which is published in HAWKWIND. Harry says the novel is sort of poor man’s Lake Woebegone.
Another book, The Tenement Series, written from the point of view of a young boy in the tenement slums of the twenties, has been published on this site.
HAWKWIND is honored to be the primary site containing most of the writings of Harry Buschman. It is our sincere belief that Harry Buschman is one of the best authors to emerge in recent time, and we hope our visitors will enjoy his works found here.

Harry said he is devoted to the short story for three reasons. "I cannot express myself in verse for one; for another, it would be foolishly optimistic at my age to start a novel. Thirdly, my stories are anecdotes of my past, the people I’ve known, the places I’ve been and the ups and downs of a lifetime. All of my writing is based on fact," he explained.
He offers mentoring to a
limited number of young writers, and enjoys participating as a staff member
on three literary Web sites. "I have resisted offers of paid publishing
to protect the copyright to my stories. It is my fondest hope that they
may some day be a legacy to my children. In the meantime they are mine
to offer freely to the Internet or to edit as I see fit," he said.
