From A Grateful Daughter By Barbara Burrow |
I Remember Mother
chatting with strangers like she'd known them all her life
canning peaches on the breezeway on hot summer days
always making sure we had frilly Easter dresses
always giving us lots of Christmas presents and making sure we had an equal number of gifts
letting all three of us kids watch "As The World Turns" with her
watching "Queen for a Day" and all of us crying together over the sad stories
cooking whatever we wanted for our birthday supper (no matter what it was!)
frying chicken for a picnic lunch the night before our vacation road trips
finishing endless crossword puzzles
cooking homemade doughnuts in the deep fryer
watching "Wheel of Fortune"
baking her wonderful lemon pie which I loved
struggling to shampoo my hair when I was five years old, because I was afraid of getting soap in my eyes
making delicious date nut loaf (nobody else could make it like her)
teaching me how to cook the traditional Thanksgiving cornbread dressing
bestowing in us her love to read books
loving us unconditionally
being so happy that Mike and I are so happy
being thrilled that I finally made her a grandmother
watching and enjoying the Gaither Gospel videos
always saying to us "Hi Darling", even the last few days of her life
