Must have been listening
Small child with big brown eyes open wide
Taking it all in
All those Bible stories and songs
Teachers like Lillie Mae and Willie Rhea
Oh, what southern names we have...
Must have been listening
Please, Mother, I want to wear that outfit,
Frilly blue taffeta dress
Because, you see, I want to join the church tonight,
Jesus died on the cross and I want to go to Heaven
Just as I am.
A hot summer night, all the church windows wide open
Only air stirring is from the ceiling fans slowly turning.
Must have been listening
Then a hot, humid Sunday afternoon in the farmer's pasture
Watch out for the cows near the pond,
One hundred voices singing like angels
Shall we gather at the river.
Vacation Bible School, Summer Revivals,
Sunday School,
Piano playing at Sunday services
But what is this
Old narrow-minded men
And men with no courage to stand up for what is right
"Oh no, you can't bring that Catholic priest into this Baptist church.
You'll have to get married somewhere else."
But God, I thought you were everyone's God.
Disillusionment with everything
Now I know what man's inhumanity to man means
Years of not trusting anyone
Years of drifting away
All because of that.
But a small corner of my heart
Must have still been listening...
So many wrong decisions
So many wrong paths
But must have been listening
For I know I am forgiven for everything.
I'm back! And I know You have always been there.
Still need You.
Insecurities and jealousies abound.
Still listening...
And still hear Your voice
