Piano Recital in Summer

By Barbara Burrow

It was too hot in the room to the side of the stage…
So hot and sticky, they had to put up tall electric fans that made a noise that was too loud.

But it was also loud from the kids' running around playing chase, mostly boys chasing girls with June bugs
that had flown in through the wide-open windows in the second floor music room.

While at the same time, out on the stage in front of nervous and proud parents, one at a time,
A child tried to put fingers on the right keys and play an easy song carefully memorized.

There was a fan on stage too, but it didn't seem to help…
One really couldn't feel a breeze stirring out there, especially if a girl had worn a frilly taffeta dress (probably the same dress worn for the last three years)

But oh, what a wonderful feeling of relief when the recital was over!
No worries about this any more.
At least until this time next year….
